It is important to digitize slide, negative and print media sooner rather than later, because all of these original media sources lose quality over time. Two factors that can negatively effect the physical state of a slide are improper storage and handling of the media. Exposure to heat, moisture and light will also cause slides to deteriorate more rapidly. Processed film deteriorates also over time, but storing negatives in cool, dry and dark environment will help them survive the ravages of time. Black & White film tends to last longer than color film. Prints fade over time and direct sunlight speeds up the process, unfortunately. If you can, it is important to digitize your photographs, while they are still in good shape.
